BURMA:monk beaten and taken from his monastery

- A monk was beaten and taken from his monastery when government officials and supporters raided a monastery in New Dagon township yesterday, according to a local source.Around 150 Union Solidarity and Development Association members, township Peace and Development Council officials and police officers raided Aung Dhamma Pala monastery in eastern New Dagon township, according to a local source close to the monastery.One monk, U Sanda Wara, was beaten up and taken from the monastery, which was then ransacked by the officials.

- Burma's detained opposition leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met the liaison minister U Aung Kyi on Monday.Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, has been taken from house arrest to a meeting at a government guest house in Rangoon. Details of the talks are not yet known, but she's held two similar meetings in the past month with an official from the military government.

- Burmese state-run newspaper, The New Light of Myanmar reported on Monday that there was “no reason to hold further discussions with any person or any organization except at the National Convention,”

–The All-Burmese Monks’ Alliance released a statement yesterday saying they would continue to boycott the military regime and urging the public to join them in protesting against the junta. The statement was released yesterday to mark the second month since the monks’ boycott of the government began, in which they have refused to accept alms from government officials and supporters. They condemned the violent treatment of monks by the regime, and vowed to continue to march against the government, and called on students and civilians in the country to join them. The group also welcomed the formation of the International Burmese Monks Organisation, a new group set up in the US on 28 October by monks from all around the world. The statement said the alliance would cooperate with the new international group to fight for their nation and their religion. They also welcomed the statement from detained democracy icon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, which was read by United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari on 8 November.

WORLD

- The European Union has formally adopted new sanctions against Burma following the suppression of pro-democracy protests in September. The sanctions were approved by EU foreign ministers in Brussels, who said they wanted to see constructive dialogue between the Burmese authorities and the opposition. The measures include a wider visa ban against members of the military government and an embargo on imports of Burmese timber, metal and gemstones.

- The reputation and credibility of Southeast Asia's main political bloc is at stake because of Burma's junta and its refusal to allow a transition to democracy, the top US trade official said Monday. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations "has a special responsibility when it comes to the situation in Burma," US Trade Representative Susan Schwab told reporters after a meeting with Asean economic ministers in Singapore.

- The Association of South East Asian Nations has rejected a US Senate call to suspend Burma from the organisation over the crushing of recent protests.

- SINGAPORE  - A Myanmar dissident slammed ASEAN's failure to pressure the junta over its crackdown on pro-democracy protests, as the 10-member group unveiled a charter on Tuesday aimed at enshrining human rights and democracy. "It's a historical moment for them to sign the charter, which is supposed to be the charter for the protection and promotion of human rights, and now they let the (Myanmar) regime take over their agenda," said Thailand-based Khin Ohmar.

-Permanent mission of the Czech Repuublic to the UN held a panel discussion on Child Soldiers and Internally displaced persons in Burma.
