Gere for boycott of Beijing Olmpics

NEW YORK: Actor RICHARD GERE chases a fugitive Bosnian war criminal in his latest movie role, but in real life the devout Buddhist is pursuing China on human rights abuses and says a boycott of the Beijing Olympics could help.

Gere, chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet, said the 2008 Beijing Olympics were a good opportunity to encourage China to end human rights abuses in Tibet and allow the Himalayan region to decide its future.

"A general boycott to me certainly has value; it's probably impractical, but emotionally absolutely makes sense," Gere, 58, said. "Why should the world reward people who are obviously so bad to their own people, so bad to other people."

"In the same sense, encouragement is really important," he said in an interview to promote the new film, opening in US theatres on Friday. "Not one country on this planet has got it all together, including the United States."

In The Hunting Party Gere takes on another contentious international issue - fugitives from the 1992-95 Bosnian war. Gere plays war reporter Simon Hunt. In 2000 Hunt, cameraman Duck, played by TERRENCE HOWARD, and rookie reporter Benjamin, played by Jesse Eisenberg, set off on a sometimes humorous search for Bosnia's most wanted war criminal -- "The Fox."

he movie was developed from an Esquire magazine article by war correspondent SCOTT ANDERSON. Anderson and four other journalists reunited in Sarajevo in 2000 and came up with a sketchy plan to find top war crimes fugitive Radovan Karadzic.

To their surprise they came closer than they ever thought they would to finding Karadzic and had a run in with the CIA that left them with the impression that Washington didn't really want to catch war criminals.

So where I can I sign a petition? What organizations can be joined to make impact? Why isn't there a petition to sign on this website?

we are also wanting to boycott china on many levels.

There will be a special on our animal rights tour
and we will make this a huge part of our tour story.

Richard we've contacted your publicist too and we made a song called 'Cry' for human and animal rights, from the animals perspective, or any downtrodden.

We lived in a van in L.A while looking for Richard Gere, who doesn't live there. We're deeply involved with reincarnation and Boycotting.
We want to help Richard with the Boycott as we are musicians.

He should focus in addition to this great work self control and dicipline that would honor the culture that he isfighting for more , bynot abusig or fostering or encouraging g abuse of a young woman that was his friend. By not sanctioning either hate crimes or experimentiation and certainly by not being duplicit in the sense that you cant fight oppresson in other coutnries if you are busy even in one relationship roobbing someone of their liberty or choice even in and especially in regards to spiritual things. dong nothing is the equvalent of being guilty. Something i am sure thathis cuase understands very well.

yes doing nothing!! you are right is as guilty...

this is absurd. as someone who has been training for the olympics, this is only a frustrating not to mention it will cause more political hostility. think about your US athletes who have been training all their lives. Do not make the same mistake we made in 1980.

The Athletes should take a stand and demand to hold the Olympics elsewhere. To make billions of dollars of profit for China is disgusting. The are already money driven. Besides the treatment of it's people:
Picture this, you're a 9 foot bear on your back in a 3 foot coffin,
you never stand, never get outside, they stick a rusty catheter in to your spine and spleen and drip drip drip you for your bear bile. Bears live up to 20 years in these 1/2 alive conditions and your whining about the Olympics, if you've been training so hard then make it damn well stand for something besides ego and vanity. SPORTS MY FRIEND, is not worth this. It's just some damn competition and being the best is relative. Cause what if you just have a bad day and really are the best.

The Chinese need to be stopped.
Their record as far as Human rights are concerned is abhorrent to all humanity.
China won the Olympic Games because it promised to clean up its act. it has done nothing.
Take the games from China and highlight their active drive to eliminate a whole race and culture built on love and compassion.
The world needs to be united on this otherwise China will dominate the world politically and economically.
I cry for the plight of all Tibetans and pray these atrocities will end.
No country seems to be willing to support Tibet directly against China.
America invaded Iraq to stop Saddam Husseim....What about Tibet?
What about direct sanctions against China.
We are a Global empire now...we have to support each other to preserve human rights for all mankind.
I pray for the Dalai Lama and imagine the anguish this must be causing him.
I pray for the plight of all Tibetans and let them know we support you!!!
